About Michael Garnham – Counsellor and Psychotherapist

Experienced counselling and psychotherapy for trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties and addiction, combining professional expertise with lived experience of recovery.

People come to therapy for many different reasons

Some are struggling with anxiety that never seems to switch off. Some are trying to understand the impact of difficult experiences from the past. Others are concerned about alcohol or drug use, finding relationships difficult, or feeling stuck in patterns they can’t seem to change.

Whatever brings you here, my aim is to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where we can explore what is happening and work towards meaningful, lasting change.

I believe therapy works best when there is a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, honesty and understanding. My role isn’t to tell you what to do or offer quick fixes. Instead, I work alongside you, helping you develop insight, understand the challenges you are facing and find new ways forward.

MY Bcakground

I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist with over 17 years of experience supporting individuals through a wide range of emotional, psychological and behavioural difficulties.

Alongside my private practice, I’ve spent many years working within addiction treatment services, supporting people affected by alcohol and drug use, trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties and other complex emotional challenges.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with people at many different stages of change. Some arrive feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about where to begin. Others are rebuilding their lives after addiction, navigating difficult relationships or trying to make sense of experiences that continue to affect them years later.

My experience has taught me that no two people are the same, which is why I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy.

Why I Became a Therapist

My journey into therapy began through my own experience of recovery.

When I entered treatment in 1996, I came from a background where therapy wasn’t something I would have naturally considered. It simply wasn’t part of my world. Like many people, I had misconceptions about what therapy involved and whether it could really help.

What changed my perspective was experiencing the benefits for myself.

The Insight

The insight, support and personal growth I gained through therapy played an important role in my own recovery and showed me the value of having a safe space to explore difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences.

The Experience

That experience became the foundation for the work I do today. I wanted to offer others the same opportunity for understanding, growth and change that I had experienced myself.

The Journey

Over the years, this led me to train as an integrative psychotherapist, allowing me to broaden my skills and support people facing a wide range of emotional, psychological and relationship challenges.

My Approach to Therapy

I work as an Integrative Therapist, which means I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches depending on your needs, experiences and goals.

My training includes:

Rather than trying to fit you into a particular model, I tailor therapy to the individual sitting in front of me.

Together, we will explore not only the difficulties that have brought you to therapy, but also the underlying patterns, experiences and beliefs that may be contributing to them. The aim is not simply to manage symptoms, but to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and create meaningful, sustainable change.
